The Task Force’s mission statement – “The City of Detroit Immigration Task Force is a collaboration of stakeholders committed to the mission to improve the quality of life for all new, existent, and future immigrants in the City of Detroit.”

Kicking off the meeting with everyone doing introductions and one fun thing they have done this summer.
Moving along to discuss the Detroit ID Program. The task force held a press conference to lift up concerns. https://t.co/lG5lEfEi1z
Urging the city to purchase the equipment and print in-house. The costs are about $10k. This would help avoid issues of data sharing that can occur with outside vendors.

The task force agreed to give the city one week to be responsive to their new requests and suggestions. If they do not get a response they will regroup and move forward with a different plan.

There is conversation around an RFQ going out, hopefully in September, that will support a new staff person to support the comprehensive strategy plan. It is currently going through the HR protocol before release.
The comprehensive plan consists of researching best practices in the following cities; Lousiville, San Antonio, Baltimore, and St. Paul. These cities were identified by Welcome in America as having already done a comp plan and would be beneficial to Detroit.
Communications and events up first, currently has no leadership and needs someone to step up. This committee raises the awareness of the task force and is responsive to current happenings in the media.
Reviewing potential new logo for the ITF. Questions were raised on why “Detroit City Council” is present. This is a task force of the council, but they can choose to leave it off the logo or put something simpler. Councilmember Gabriela and the council needs to review and approve https://t.co/uRUCQ1sOfe
Welcoming Week is coming up the second week in September. ITF is seeking ideas and volunteers if anyone is interested in supporting!
External Relations has met with all council members and other city departments. Most notable is with DWSD around the lifeline program to make sure eligible immigrants are included. They have a meeting with Wayne Metro tomorrow to talk about the criteria.
DWSD was open to making changes to match DTE’s requirements to opening an account when asked. Going forward, to open a water account you’ll need one of the following; social security card, driver’s license, state ID, passport, military ID, Native American Tribal ID, or Detroit ID
Discussion around what types of city flyers should be translated. Showed several examples that were not translated when circulated. Noted to consider the method of delivery as well.
Unanimous support to translate all documents and extend outreach efforts.
Issues that are being addressed – departments are not aware that they could be translating their materials, not having anyone assigned to the language access workgroup led by Creo and they are not translating and they are not providing interpreters.
Detroit Our City committee is seeking new members. If you’re interested in joining, there is a meeting today at 2pm.
ICE/CBP committee shared immigration court proceedings are going forward as is, but the chief counsel’s office is open to reviewing the determinations.
