Only one person has signed up to speak during the public comments component: Ward Miller of Preservation Chicago strongly supports the preservation of the Ludlow Typograph Company Building as a Chicago landmark, and laments strip mall developments as “flawed urban planning.”

The second order of business is to consider to approve the Ludlow Typograph Company Building as a Chicago landmark. The CPD staff recommends the designation.

Alderman Hopkins spoke in full support of the plan.

Commissioners vote to accept the staff recommendation, and approve the Ludlow building as a landmark.

For the next order of business, the CPD staff recommends approval of the partial demolition of the property in Fulton Market at 210 North Aberdeen Street.

Chair Ernie Wong remarks that this demolition will be “like surgery.”

The commissioners unanimously accept the CPD staff recommendations for the approval after roll call.

Brief committee reports were given by staff, and kudos were given to longtime staff member, Larry Shure, who is leaving to become a consultant with the Chicago Transit Authority.

The meeting adjourns at 1:12, to be followed by the Permit Review meeting, which starts at 1:20.

Gabriel Ignacio Dziekiewicz, Vice Chair, has opened the meeting at 1:20.

Only one permit is on the docket for review regarding proposed new signage at the historic Jeweler’s Building at 15-19 S. Wabash, located in the 42nd Ward.

Public comment has opened, and again, Ward Miller, Executive Director of Preservation Chicago is the only speaker signed up.

DPD staff recommend the “nonilluminated” signage since it adheres to regulations in place for historic buildings.

The proposal ensures the signage “will be attached only at the brick mortar joints and will not attach to the historic Joliet limestone.”

The motion was voted on and carries unanimously.
